Martha Lamont

Martha Lamont's work delves into the dynamic between conscious thought and the subconscious. A continuous flow of ideas, often conflicting, fuels her creative process. This internal dialogue translates into sketchbooks filled with fleeting thoughts and imagery, serving as a springboard for future exploration.

Drawing inspiration from the concept of "sci-fi botany," Lamont manipulates and combines natural elements like plants, animals, and the human form. This results in fantastical and surreal imagery where these hybrid forms inhabit dreamlike landscapes. By pushing the boundaries of perception, Lamont invites viewers to question their understanding of reality.

Lamont's paintings, primarily created with Indian ink, fluid acrylics, and watercolours, embrace the inherent unpredictability of the artistic process. By surrendering control and allowing the materials to influence the direction of the work, chance and accident become integral elements. The resulting paintings are microcosms, existing on the cusp of reality and imagination. They beckon viewers to enter these enigmatic worlds and contemplate their own place within them.

In her latest painting, 'Uncertain Futures', Martha Lamont explores the pervasive sense of unease surrounding the unknown. Seeking to counter this anxiety, the work depicts a forest overflowing with potential. Inspired by the delicate beauty of orchids, a third light emerges, evoking a sense of fragile hope. These subtle references, the artist suggests, emerged organically as the painting took shape. Her work  explores into the complexities of the human experience, exploring themes of hope, resilience, and the interconnectedness of nature and the human spirit.
